CHAPTER 18
Dylan winced when he received Sofia’s text. It had taken her so long to reply that he figured she must have gone to sleep already. But she’d sent him her own, I saw this and thought of you text after he’d reminded her of her childhood nickname, Twerpie. She’d sent him an epic photo of four construction workers stood atop the Wilshire Grand Tower in downtown Los Angeles.
“In case you were wondering…” she’d added cheekily. “That bit where they’re standing is one thousand, one hundred feet above the ground.”
She was so going to pay for that. He swallowed the bile that had risen up the back of his throat.
His cell-phone rang but when he looked at the caller ID, it was Dante. “What’s up?” Dylan asked. His father hadn’t taken this much interest in him even when he’d been a rebellious teenager.
“I was just wondering how the session’s going with Staci Q? She’s at a crucial point in her career.”
“So everybody keeps saying,” Dylan rolled his eyes. “I assume it’s going well since she’s been in there for hours.”
“What do you mean, you “assume” it’s going well? Where the heck are you?” Dante yelled. “I didn’t pay for you to fly to New York so you could slack off.”
“Despite what you might think,” Dylan had to work really hard to keep his composure, “I take my work seriously, OK. I’ve given one hundred and ten percent to everything you’ve asked of me. I’m not slacking off; I’m literally right outside the studio door. I wanted to get some work done on my proposal and there were too many prying eyes in there.”
“You’re supposed to be learning all aspects of the business, Dylan.”
“I really don’t see what difference it makes whether I’m in the studio or not. I’m not exactly Staci Q’s demographic, you know?”
“You think I’m a huge fan of all of our artists?” Dante sounded exasperated. “It might not be my personal preference but I can recognise talent.”
Dylan lowered his voice, “I didn’t come back to L.A. to be an A&R guy. I came here to take over as president of this company. The president doesn’t have to know whether every artist they sign is good or not, he just has to hire people who do. I’ve never seen anybody more protective of somebody else’s career than Molly is about Staci Q. She doesn’t need me, she’s totally got this.”
Dante sighed, “you dislike Mark for only wanting to sign artists who’ve already got a huge following on social media but yet you’re doing the exact same thing. When you take over as president of this company, the buck stops with you. You’re ultimately responsible for every success and every failure. How do you know that the people you’ve hired are going to steer you right? You can’t rely on people’s reputations because just like somebody’s social media following, they can change in an instant. You need to have the right people around you but you also need to be aware of everything that's going on in your company otherwise you’re doomed to fail.
